Joey Gomez – Tonight

Emerging pop artist Joey Gomez is making waves with the release of his new single Tonight, launched alongside a bold, anime-inspired animated music video on March 20th. Originally from Medellin, Colombia, Joey moved to Canada at a young age and has been crafting his sound ever since—an infectious blend of English and Spanish pop driven by catchy melodies and deeply personal themes. “I was initially inspired by pop English/Spanish music with catchy melodies and began writing songs with the intent of creating melodies as catchy as they could be” Joey explains. Tonight marks a turning point in his journey as an artist, not only because it’s the first single from his upcoming debut album, but also because of the message behind it: letting go of the past and living freely in the present.

While Joey’s previous songs have leaned into romance and nostalgia, Tonight stands apart for its embrace of transformation. “This song has a much different style than all my other songs,” he says. “While most of my songs revolve around romance and nostalgia, this song is about embracing change and living in the moment.” The track was co-written with London-based producer and songwriter Scott Dasco, whose work Joey deeply admires. Together, they created a song that feels both emotionally honest and undeniably catchy.

To bring that energy to life visually, Joey partnered with LyricVids.com to create a fully animated, anime-style music video—a bold choice that has clearly paid off. “I wanted to do something different that could capture the concept in cartoon style” he says. The resulting video tells a powerful, emotionally layered story that would have been difficult (and costly) to achieve using traditional live-action filming.

Set in a fictionalized Toronto, the narrative begins with a strange, unexplained phenomenon that ripples across the city. We see a priest awaken as a mysterious blast of light breaks through his room. A woman riding the streetcar feels the ground shake while reading about the same event on her phone. At a diner, an elderly couple grab for each other as their surroundings tremble. The phenomenon sets the stage for something deeper: a spiritual and emotional shift in each of these characters.

As the evening unfolds, we witness the priest removing his traditional religious attire and dressing in modern clothes, preparing for a night out. The woman from the streetcar is shown taking off her hijab and applying makeup, glowing in a bright yellow dress. Both characters have visibly shed the expectations placed upon them by religion, culture, or societal norms. When the priest responds to a message from a male friend asking to meet up, it becomes clear that the night is leading toward something more meaningful.

We later see him at a nightclub, blending into a group of men with ease and comfort, while the woman arrives with her girlfriend, both dancing freely. Throughout the club, walls fall away, facades dissolve, and joy takes over. There’s chemistry between the woman and one of the priest’s friends, and a deeper connection between the priest and his own companion. The video closes with both couples sharing a romantic kiss beneath a glittering sky—suggesting that whatever mysterious force shook the world that day also freed these characters from their inner restraints, allowing them to finally live as their true selves.

For Joey, the video’s most powerful moment is when the priest and his date share a quiet, magical connection. “My favorite part of the video is when the priest meets with his date and they have a magical moment,” he says. That moment, and the journey leading up to it, encapsulate the heart of Tonight—a celebration of self-discovery, courage, and emotional freedom.

Animated music videos like Tonight are growing in popularity, and for good reason. They offer a level of creativity, freedom, and narrative control that can be hard to replicate in live action. For independent artists in particular, traditional music videos can be prohibitively expensive, requiring cast, crew, locations, permits, and weeks of coordination. Animation, on the other hand, offers a far more cost-effective solution—especially when working with studios like LyricVids.com, who specialize in visually stunning lyric and animated videos. Animation allows artists to dive into fantasy, metaphor, and emotion without being limited by the physical world. And with anime culture enjoying a massive global resurgence, fans are more engaged than ever with stylized, illustrated storytelling. Animated videos resonate across cultures and age groups, and they often have more replay value thanks to the visual depth and creativity they offer.

Joey Gomez is embracing that momentum and using it to push boundaries—both in his music and his visuals. With Tonight, he’s offering fans more than just a song—he’s offering a statement. And it’s only the beginning. Joey has three more singles on the way, followed by his full debut album later this year. To keep up with his journey, fans can follow him on TikTok at @joeygozr. If Tonight is any indication of what’s to come, Joey Gomez is an artist who isn’t afraid to be bold, be different, and be true to himself—and that’s exactly what makes him one to watch.
