Bass trap music is the hottest new genre in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene. It has roots dating back to the early 2010s and has had an ever-expanding fanbase ever since. It blends the elements of southern hip hop subgenre trap music with elements of EDM like build-ups, drops and breakdowns. In 2019, budding EDM producer ON THE HUNT released her bass-boosted trap record ‘GORGON’ featuring ESAE and shortly followed the success of that release with a haunting new professional lyric video.

ON THE HUNT aka Isabella Cai, is a self-taught DJ and producer from California. Currently residing in San Francisco, this up-and-coming artist has had explosive success since her debut hits ‘Turn It Up‘ and ‘Cake’. OTH has an extensive background in music and is now known for her bass-boosted productions and as a rising superstar in the bass trap music scene. She has opened for artists such as trap star QUIX and electro-pop singer DYLN and has appeared on global playlists including those of transnational dubstep icon Liquid Stranger, BonHaus and Tribal Music Group’s promotional channel Tribal Trap amounting to over 2.5 million streams.

In 2019, OTH released her bass trap hit ‘GORGON’ via Magic Records featuring LA based singer/songwriter and producer, ESAE. Pronounced ee-say, this classically trained artist has a knack for combining melody and storytelling to her music. ESAE is extremely versatile and is known for blending different genres including hip hop, indie pop, blues and jazz. These two promising musicians have worked together to produce a hot new bass trap single that has since received a tidal wave of positive feedback.

In November 2019, ON THE HUNT released a creepy but epic professional lyric video to pair with electronic banger ‘GORGON’. This music video is the perfect nightmare, and it is transparent that the theme of this song is dark and malevolent. Throughout the video the background flashes rapidly between multiple textured backgrounds varying in shades of grey which produces a dirty and gritty disposition. It is clear that the focal point of this music video are the lyrics which are presented in a sinister brush styled font.

This song has a fast-paced electronic beat and I love the way that the lyrics appear on the screen in a very fast and responsive way that coincides with it. One of my favourite features of this animated lyric video is at the beginning in the title sequence there is a randomization of letters that flicker until it reads ‘GORGON’ which is so spine-chilling but only in the best way. The animated illustrations in this lyric video are to die for (not literally).

Throughout the video we see flashes of these makeshift illustrated skulls and it is apparent to me that these symbolize the gorgon or the things of our nightmares as the term is historically derived from the ancient Greek word meaning grim or dreadful or from Sanskrit representing the growling of the beast. Alongside the lyrics, there are these wicked illustrations that seem to directly relate to the words. For example, ESAE sings “Climb my way up from hell” and there is a spooky tombstone with the aforementioned skull head mounted atop and a shadowy hand reaching upward as it unearths from the ground.

Another scene the line reads “Hands dirty from the blood” and there is a quick flash between two handprints. The first appears to be an illustration of a regular handprint and then it swiftly changes to a bloody handprint. I love these graphics as there are so many and they are huge contributors to the overall theme. Lastly, throughout the video the screen constantly seems to be moving and shaking almost as if the bass was on blast and shaking the video itself which I think is a brilliant add-on effect that ties the whole brand together.

This professional lyric video seems to have it all including OTH’s signature eagle head logo as a multicolored visualizer. It is so creatively eye-catching, I had to watch it over and over to truly capture all its little quirks. The video is a whirlwind of dark fantasies paired with a high energy bass trap sound and leaves all of OTH’s fans dying for more.
