Originally from Tomball, Texas, Christian contemporary icon David Phelps has been surrounded by music for as long as he can remember. Growing up, his family and community knew that David had a natural gift. As a teenager, he sang in church and even went off to graduate from Baylor University with a degree in vocal performance. His vocal range is incredible, extending more than three octaves. For nearly 20 years, David was a defining member of the American southern gospel vocal group, Gaither Vocal Band as a tenor and received numerous Grammy Awards, Dove Awards and multiple platinum-selling recording projects. During his time with the group, he was still able to focus his energy on his solo career with 14 Billboard chart topping solo albums and millions of streams across all music platforms. David has had the privilege of performing at the most prestigious venues including the White House, Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Now living and raising his 4 children with wife Lori on a farm outside of Nashville, Tennessee, David came together with his son Grant to release a soulful duet titled ‘Eye To Eye‘.

Written by David himself, this heartfelt piece is a special track on his newest album ‘GAMECHANGER‘ released September 10th via independent gospel music label StowTown Records and co-produced with his nephew Grayson Proctor. Although the album features a combination of jazz, pop and R&B influences, ‘Eye To Eye‘ is a more inspirational adult contemporary song highlighting the generational struggles and relationship complexities between a parent and their child. On October 15th, David Phelps released a professional custom lyric video for ‘Eye To Eye’ featuring stunning visuals of him and his son Grant and allowing fans to take a closer look at his private life. The concept for the music video takes inspiration from the album cover art which features a digital theme with blue neon lights and glowing text. This helps create a consistent visual brand for fans and are easily able to find the video again in the future as well as associate the song with it’s respective album.

The custom illustrations in this lyric video are electrifying. Right off the bat, there are neon glowing images of David and Grant and of them singing and performing together. We see David’s signature curly locks and beard and fans can certainly see the family resemblance in Grant who is sprouting a bit of facial hair himself. After the first hook we see a story being told about a typical father/son relationship throughout the years starting with a younger David holding his baby son as the lyrics read and David sings “Son I’ve been here before“. The visuals in this video are poignant and certainly a focal point throughout the music video as they tend to represent the lyrics being sung. Next we see the young father putting a band aid on his little son’s knee as he wipes his tears and the lyrics read “You don’t have to make every mistake“. The tables turn in the next scene when we see a picture of grown up Grant as he proclaims “But this is my life…” and fans really begin to see and understand what this song is about. Throughout the video we watch Grant grow up with his father by his side but just as in any family, he begins to do his own thing and live his own life and he doesn’t always need his dad there to guide him. We see this in the scenes that shows David at his teenage son’s bedroom door that reads “Do NOT Enter!” as he sings “But when the pieces fall“. We watch Grant grow into a man and leave to follow his own dreams and viewers (especially those who have children) can really understand this parent/child dynamic where you have to eventually concede that their choices are theirs and that you will be there for them when they need you.

The color palette for this lyric video is really eye-catching with the deep purple, blue and pink. It’s gives off retro cyber punk vibes which is also consistent with the ‘GAMECHANGER‘ theme and the album cover. The lyrics are showcased in a really creative way, using two different fonts but remaining in that digital space. The neon script font spells out the words beautifully and key phrases or words are displayed via a bold neon bulb style font and are brought to life with a bright glow effect. This video is truly striking as it’s not possible to look away from all of the luminous imagery whilst captivated by David’s show-stopping vocals and infamous story writing. It’s extremely effective at conveying the meaning of the song using the custom illustrations of David and his son Grant and adds an extra layer of emotion that you can hear Phelps is expressing in his vocals.
