Bassjackers – Want You (So Bad)

Spinnin’ Records is known for releasing chart topping singles via all of their amazing artists. In May of 2020 they did not disappoint when Dutch electronic music production and DJ duo Bassjackers released their club banger, ‘Want You (So Bad)’. This big room house party song was paired with an equally as fun professionally animated lyric video that had us all raving.

Spinnin’ Records is the world’s leading dance record label. Founded in 2007, they are now home to the world’s biggest names in electronic music including Marshmello, Avicii, Tiesto & Calvin Harris. Bassjackers are one of their star Dutch house duo’s with their songs receiving over 100 million views on YouTube. From Tilburg, Netherlands, Bassjackers is a unique pairing, with member Ralph van Hilst behind the scenes as the producer and the other, Marlon Florhr as the frontman and DJ. Starting their red carpet career in high school, these two formed Bassjackers in 2007. In 2011, they hit the spotlight with their electro house single ‘Mush Mush’ and was picked up by Tiësto and the song was released on his record label, Musical Freedom. They have remixed songs for A-list artists including Rihanna, Enrique Iglesias and Ne-Yo as well as collaborated with Afrojack, R3hab and Martin Garrix.  Their success continued to skyrocket, earning them on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ’s for 5 years in a row as well as Beatport’s Top 100 list. In May of 2020 they released their new progressive house styled track ‘Want You (So Bad)’. This song is an immediate club anthem featuring an uplifting beat and very catchy lyrics. The vocals are pitched and crispy clean and it is apparent they are inspired by a modern genre of electronic music referred to as future bounce. The energy on this record is infectious and it is most definitely my new guilty pleasure.

Electro dance music like Bassjackers’ ‘Want You (So Bad)’ is so lively that visuals can really propel the experience for their fans, that much further. That is exactly what happened with the professionally animated lyric video that accompanied this track. This video is immediately eye catching with an intense triadic color combination of bright red, yellow and blue. Color combinations are very impactful in portraying a specific mood, and in this lyric video’s case, it is fun and energetic. This color scheme is present throughout the entire music video and plays a key role in representing the brand of the artists and the song. We are introduced to an ethereal feminine character with blue skin and red and yellow accents (lips, nails, shoes). What is amazing about this digital illustration is that it is a perfectly executed reproduction of Bassjackers’ ‘Want You (So Bad)’ single artwork. Instead of just getting the blue hands, the illustrator was able to deliver different variations of this same character, keeping the theme and brand consistent across the board.

The fluidity is continuous, playing off the flower in the artwork. We see beautifully animated flowers blooming from the goddess-like character, giving us surreal visuals like when the flowers bloom from her eyes or when they grow from inside of her head. The color choices for the flowers are soft and fit perfectly in the music video’s palette without completely pulling focus from the lyrics. The font choices for the lyrics are big and bubbly and bounce playfully on the screen. There is a funky wiggle movement to the lyrics which coincides with the viewers body, effortlessly grooving to this song’s beat. The size of the font is perfectly eye catching and allows the fans to sing along. My favourite part of this video is the animated visuals during the lyrics, “Keep that loving ‘til the day that I die, yeah”. We are mesmerized when red blood begins to drip down the screen and we see a tombstone rise from the ground and the lyrics are continued as the epitaph of the gravestone. This is truly creative and was a moment of such potential in the song for a wild visual, and they delivered without any hesitation. Another moment in the lyric video that possessed similar effectivity was during the line, “Yeah deep in my heart and deep in my lungs…”. There is a striking illustration of a set of lungs completely ravished with flowers and it is very poetic.

The visuals presented in this professional custom lyric video matches flawlessly with both the energy of the electronic dance music as well as the encompassed brand of the artist and their album. EDM is dominating the music scene and when combined with new visuals, could be unstoppable. The colors, the bouncy movement, the bubbly font and the killer illustrations are all so powerful and is evidence as to why quality animated lyric videos are the hottest new element of the music industry.
