Gregg Bolger – Any Other Night

Here at LyricVids, we love supporting our fellow Canadian artists. One of our favourites is Canadian country music singer/songwriter Gregg Bolger. Originally hailing from Torbay, Newfoundland but spent a large portion of his early music career performing approximately 150 shows a year in St. John’s. Now based in Calgary, Alberta, Gregg has created quite the name for himself in the industry working with professionals such as American country pop singer Jordan Davis, Nashville’s Josh Dorr, multi-Juno and Canadian Country Music Award winner George Canyon and guitarist John Marlin. In September of 2013, he released his self-titled debut album and has since released many singles throughout the year including ‘All I Need‘ and ‘When the Moon Comes Up‘ which has over 100,000 plays on Spotify. This father of 2 is well known for his songwriting skillset, Gregg has co-written with multi-Juno and Canadian Country Music Award winner Mike Little and Candace Lacina of ‘The Hello Darlins’.

His songs often tell stories of life, love and heartbreak which makes his music that much more relatable and are always accompanied by his talented vocals. On August 27th, Gregg released his lively single ‘Any Other Night‘ which was written by Gregg himself as well as his wife, Jennifer Moss-Bolger and co-written and produced by Clint Curtis of Sevenview Studios in Newfoundland. Gregg says, “I try to write songs that people can relate too…The song is about a guy who is just going out with his buddy, the same as he has done many many times, but unlike every other time, a girl shows up at the bar and life is forever changed!“. When asked how this track is different from any of his other releases he says, “With every release we try to raise the bar and make it better then the last! Working with the right people helps that along! Clint help raise the bar on this tune with a ridiculous amount of backing vocals to help keep the song interesting for the listener!“.

Simultaneously with his single release, Gregg accompanied his country pop track ‘Any Other Night‘ with a fun and professionally illustrated lyric video. With the title scene, the viewer can sense a red, white & blue colour theme which is consistent throughout the video. The two font choices, a bold gritty serif and a grainy script, compliment each other perfectly. The colour scheme is continuous in the text throughout the video alternating between the red white and blue. The lyrics are large and bold and really pop out against the textured backgrounds. These backgrounds are unique because in an otherwise illustrated video, they are real images of bricks and woodgrain that have been tinted to also follow the colour theme. The elephant in the room here though, is the stunning sketch-style illustrations that help bring Greggs storytelling lyrics to life. The lyrics start off with, “Get the call from my best friend like any other night” and we see the main character hanging out at home on the couch watching TV. My favourite part about this scene is the subtle detail in the guy’s Converses and the way he is positioned on the couch, which is exactly how so many guys watch TV.

As the video continues, we see a text from his friend on his cell phone telling him to come out for some beers which coincides perfectly with Gregg’s lyrics. I particularly enjoy the shot of the empty pint glass on the bar top. You can see foam on the inside of the glass, the wet spot underneath and the wrinkly pocket cash on the edge of the bar. This illustration is simple but really helps tell the story that our main character was done his drink and ready to leave the bar just like in the song when he sings that his plan was to go in for a quick drink and was about to go home. In the next scene he sings, “You rolled in like a thunderstorm, about the time that I was heading for the door” and we meet the total knockout that our character / Gregg is singing about. Her long blonde hair and her cute country bar outfit is great.

I particularly love that the video takes a detour in the second verse as Gregg sings about the woman and her journey to the bar. The illustrations of her looking in her closet for something to wear to the bar, getting in the cab with her friends and standing around at the bar with them, all show her side of the night, where she to wasn’t expecting to meet somebody that will change her life. We asked Gregg what his favourite part of the lyric video is and he replied, “Everything!! Originally I was hoping to do a live music video but timing with filming wasn’t working to go along with the release! I brought my vision for the music video to Anthony at LyricVids.com and he 100% captured what I was thinking in a little different format! Love it!“.

The custom illustrations in this lyric video are really charming and really bring the artist’s song to life. The different elements in this music video such as the font choices, the colour scheme and the illustrations are a great representation of contemporary country music and it is no surprise that this video will be loved by Bolger’s fanbase. Gregg addresses what’s next for him, “I’m going to promote this single right now! It was released to radio last week and all streaming sites! Initial responses have been amazing! I’m constantly playing with ideas for new songs so I would think before the end of the year or early next year I will have a follow up to “Any Other Night”. I have released a number of single over the last couple years. Maybe compile those along with some unreleased songs into a EP!“. We can’t wait!
